Usually when someone said they want to be your friend then they are not interested in you as a boyfriend or a girlfriend.  Maybe this type of people care about the other people's feeling so much that they don't have the heart to tell them how they really feel fearing that the listener will not be able to take no for an answer.  Then again there are people that are truly hurt and still are in pain from the last love relationship that they shy away dating/love all together fearing and or not wanting to go through any of the pain/troubles/heartaches that they were in while dating. 

The second type of people will eventually get over their negative thoughts and feelings about relationship and will date again as time goes by and the love wound is healed.  You can decide whether the guy you're in love with is the first type or second type but the thing is that the majority of guys are the first type.  They usually show interest and want to make the girl theirs, guys don't say they want to be friend.  If a guy says they want to be friend then there is something that he is hiding from you.  Find out how he really feels and/or what he is hiding and move on.  If you love this guy too much to be his friend then scratch him him out of your life.
